Worthen Lineage

Ancestry from Ezekiel Worthen
(1640 – 2008)
GEORGE WORTHEN The immigrant ancestor of the family born at or near Bristol, England. He was a land owner in Salem , MA in 1640. In 1641 he was admitted a member of the First Church of Salem (Congregational), which in those days indicated good standing in the community as none but people of good repute were
permitted to become church members. He died in 1642 at Salem, leafing a house and
lot in Salem. A widow Marjory Worthen survived him, dying in 1644.
EZEKIEL WORTHEN Son of George, born as near as can be figured, June 24, 1636, was only 8 ½ years of age at the date of his mothers death. The local court committed him to the custody of a man named Thomas Avery (as an apprentice) until his 20th birthday. On June 24, 1656 Ezekiel was discharged by the court from his
apprenticeship (being 20). Soon afterward he settled in Amesbury, then a thinly populated place, more remote and subject to Indian attacks. He married Hannah Martin, daughter of George Martin, a blacksmith and land surveyor. They had five
sons and 5 daughters, who intermarried with the leading families in Essex County.
His farm was held by his descendants for 175 years. Ezekiel became a Quaker. The
Congregational minister and the constable was compelled to seize and sell some of his
property at auction and sell some other valuables in order to collect owed taxes not
paid, as a Quaker. He died June 16, 1716 at the age of nearly four score years.
